The History Of

Taekwondo is a Martial Art that originated in Korea. It is seen as one of the oldest forms of Martial Arts combat in the world, reaching back over 2,000 years.

The name Taekwondo is from the Korean word “Tae” which means foot, “Kwon” meaning fist and “Do” meaning way of. That is why so many people around the world call it “Tae Kwon Do” and see the Martial Art as a way of life.

Taekwondo is a result of what happened in Korea all those years ago, and to know the history is a very important step in understanding Taekwondo and what it means to so many.

The greatest form of the ancient art tells us the story about the Kingdom of Silla. This small Kingdom constantly faced attacks from much greater opposition. Therefore, King Jin Heung, ordered an elite group of people to be carefully selected and formally trained in all aspects of military skills and combat so the Kingdom could hopefully be saved.

These young warriors would go on to be known as the “Hwarang” or the “Flower of Youth”. They are remembered in history and their philosophy lives on. The skills that they gained was not just for battle, but for daily life and that is why so many people training in the art can still apply these great teachings to most tasks today.

Taekwondo’s greatest achievement come in 2000 when the art become an Olympic sport. Taekwondo is known for having the best kicking techniques in the world and athletes have trained for years to try win a medal, as the games have given spectators so many great stories to tell.
